Niko Ilicevic marked his 16th birthday by becoming the youngest player to appear for Eintracht Frankfurt and tying Youssoufa Moukoko’s age record in the Bundesliga. He entered during the closing stages of Frankfurt’s 3-1 win over HSV at the Waldstadion, although his introduction was delayed by more than two minutes because of another substitution.

The planned handover between generations briefly brought Ilicevic together with 2014 World Cup winner Mario Götze, who came on before him. Once on the field, however, the teenager quickly attracted attention. In six to seven minutes, he recorded nine touches, six sprints and two shots on goal.

“He played far beyond what you would expect,” coach Adi Hütter said after the match, adding that the performance did not surprise him because Ilicevic regularly shows the same qualities in training. The 1.75-meter attacking player also earned praise from goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, Younes Ebnoutalib and Can Uzun, who described him as exceptionally talented and said there was much more to come.

One moment of youthful impatience came when Ilicevic chose not to pass to the better-positioned Jonathan Burkardt in front of goal. Burkardt visibly protested, but Hütter said the two players would resolve the incident themselves.

Ilicevic joined Frankfurt’s under-17 team at 13 and made his under-19 debut at 14. He currently has a development contract, while a professional deal has already been arranged to take effect when he turns 18. The club intends to manage his progress carefully and plans to give him playing time with the under-21 side in the Regionalliga.

Hütter said Frankfurt must protect the under-17 international, who also holds Croatian citizenship, from the pressure surrounding his rapid rise. The club will initially avoid media and interview appointments for him, with chief executive Axel Hellmann warning that excessive attention would not benefit a 16-year-old.

Even so, Hellmann welcomed the successful integration of a youth player into the senior squad, calling it a sign of effective movement between the academy and the professional team. Ilicevic’s uncle, Ivo, played 137 Bundesliga matches, mainly for HSV.

After the game, Ilicevic said he had been training with the professionals for four months and described receiving such a match as an incredible feeling. Frankfurt supporters celebrated him in front of the Nordwestkurve, while the club mascot Attila briefly startled him by brushing his face with a wing.
