Rivian plans to bring its R2 electric SUV to Europe next year. The model has been on sale in the United States since this summer and measures around 4.7 metres—about 40 centimetres shorter than the larger R1. Unlike body-on-frame trucks, the R2 uses a unibody structure, which the source describes as providing a more comfortable ride.
Rivian is starting with a Performance version priced at $57,990 in the US, roughly €50,000. It has two motors producing a combined 656 horsepower and can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in less than four seconds.
The company has also announced a 450-horsepower version. A later, less powerful trim is expected to have 350 horsepower, a single motor at the rear and a smaller battery than the current 88 kWh unit. Rivian says this could bring the price below $40,000, positioning the SUV as an alternative to the Tesla Model Y.
The R2 is designed for more than urban driving. It offers several drive modes for different surfaces and, according to the source, the highest ground clearance in its segment. Its practical details include a rear window that slides down to let longer items such as skis or surfboards pass through into the cargo area.
Rivian also offers a driver-assistance system for highway use. The source says a future software update will enable the SUV’s 11 cameras and five radar sensors to guide it through city traffic.
